Their popularity stems from their efficient and miserly use of natural gas. Since this type of water heater only uses gas when the hot tap is turned on there are no standby costs. You won't see a tank type last that long. Today's standard tank type heaters last only 10 - 12 years and throughout their life their operating efficiency falls to a dismal 50%.

A traditional hot water tank may be less expensive to buy in the beginning but in the long run they cost you more money in hydro, gas, water, and replacements.
