Saving Money with Tankless
Hot Water
We have received so many calls from homeowners in the Ottawa region asking if it is true about saving $200 or
more per year on their gas bill... here is how that amount is calculated.
Savings #1 - LESS GAS
USED
Your old hot water tank ran 24 hours a day every single day - this means you were constantly cooking hot water
just so you would have it when you needed it (even if you went away on holidays).
With a tankless it only turns on WHEN you use hot water. If you are not using it, it remains OFF. Since the
average home in Ottawa has 2 adults and 2 children - and the average person takes a 20 minute shower each day -
that translates into 1 hour and 20 minutes per day usage. Most people wash clothes in cold water these days so you
only add to it the 3 minutes of hot water your dishwasher uses and we are still under 1 and a half hours total
per day for a family of 4.
The tankless unit when running uses a lot of gas to operate in order to get cold water hot instantly - but
it doesn't run unless you want hot water. So the average savings per home in Ottawa equals 56 cents per day or
more which equals $200 or more per year.
Since the tankless lasts 20 to 25 years that means you will save over $4,000.00 just in gas
use in the life of that tankless unit.... that is more money saved than the cost of the unit fully
installed.
Savings #2 - STOP RENTING
The average home owner is paying $24 per month to rent a hot water tank that is terribly inefficient (less than
62%). That means $288 a year - and it goes up 2% to 4% every year with inflation costs. What does that equal in 10
years (the average life of a hot water tank)?
The answer based on the smallest annual increase (2%) is:
| Year 1 |
$288.00 |
| Year 2 |
$293.76
|
| Year 3 |
$299.64 |
| Year 4 |
$305.63 |
| Year 5 |
$311.74 |
| Year 6 |
$317.97 |
| Year 7 |
$324.33 |
| Year 8 |
$330.82 |
| Year 9 |
$337.44 |
| Year 10 |
$344.19 |
| TOTAL |
$3,153.52 |
That is based on a 2% increase but we know that our rental rates have been going up semi annually not annually
and the increase is usually more than 2%.
Here is something you may not know - you can buy a tankless system fully installed for LESS than $3,000
Or you can continue to rent - you get the rentor
to replace the hot water tank you have (since you only get 10 years on average out of one hot water tank).
So if you keep renting (again at 2% increase)....
| Year 11 |
$351.07 |
| Year 12 |
$358.09 |
| Year 13 |
$365.25 |
| Year 14 |
$372.56 |
| Year 15 |
$380.01 |
| Year 16 |
$387.61 |
| Year 17 |
$395.36 |
| Year 18 |
$403.27 |
| Year 19 |
$411.34 |
| Year 20 |
$419.57 |
| TOTAL 20 YRS |
$6,997.65 |
So now you have spent over $6,997.65 in rental fees plus you have
over paid on gas $4,000.00 more than you needed to.
That means if you continue to rent you will spend at
least $10,997.65 MORE than you needed to...
Just think what $10,997.65 would mean to you...
- vacations
- new car
- boats, motorcycles, ATV's
- personal trainer
- new wardrobe
- a new kitchen
- the list goes on and on...
Did I mention what this means to the environment??
The tankless unit saves 2 POUNDS of carbon PER DAY over a standard gas hot water
tank.
This means 730 pounds of carbon saved per year.
In 20 years you will have saved 14,600 pounds of carbon on the
environment.
The government is asking citizens in Ottawa to take the 1 ton challenge - reducing
their carbon foot print by 1 ton of carbon. Just by going tankless you save 14,600 pounds of carbon (that's over 7
tons!).
So why isn't everyone going tankless?
Because NOT all tankless units work in Canada - so many people are buying online
now and they are ending up with tankless units that are designed for the southern states (meaning they work great
if your ground water is always 22°C - but in Canada our winter ground water can
get as cold as 5°C which means these units simply
wont create hot water).
